HP Encina/9000
Product Brief
Today's leading edge businesses are moving from centralized, single vendor
environments to distributed, heterogeneous processing. Many have built
their businesses on OLTP applications. Such environments demand data
integrity as dispersed clients and servers simultaneously access databases
and files.
HP Encina/9000 (tm) is an OLTP product family designed to address these
data integrity needs. Operating on a foundation of HP DCE/9000 and HP-UX
software, HP Encina/9000 manages transactions across multivendor hardware
and databases.
HP Encina/9000 is based on technology licensed from Transarc (tm)
Corporation that has been tuned and enhanced for HP9000 Business Servers
and workstations. As a transaction manager, HP Encina/9000 is essentially
a coordinator, handling the scheduling, queueing, and load balancing of
transactions in multivendor OLTP environments. HP Encina/9000 also ensures
data integrity, protecting the atomicity, consistency, isolation and
durability of transactions.
o Flexibility of an open, client/server design
One of the key benefits of HP Encina/9000 is the flexibility which it
brings to OLTP applications.
Part of this flexibility comes from the open standards which HP Encina/9000
supports. The product is built upon the industry standard Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE) services from the Open Software Foundation
(tm). DCE is a group of standard services which allow distributed
applications to run transparently across heterogeneous networks and
systems. systems to act as one cohesive environment. HP's DCE
implementation, HP DCE/9000 addresses the needs of application developers
with development and administrative tools unmatched in other DCE offerings.
HP Encina/9000 also complies with the X/Open (tm) Distributed Transaction
Processing XA interface. X/Open defined this standard, with wide industry
endorsement, so that transaction managers and databases could have standard
interfaces. For businesses investing in HP Encina/9000, XA provides the
flexibility to mix and match any XA compliant database within an OLTP
environment.
HP Encina/9000 also provides the flexibility of a modular, client/server
design. The product family is divided into client and server components
which exploit the processing power of servers and the desktop flexibility
of clients.
Diagram 1.0 - HP Encina/9000 Architecture
HP is taking advantage of the HP Encina/9000 modularity in the architecture
of next generation products such as CICS (tm) for the HP 9000. HP is
currently working with IBM to provide a CICS API layer on HP
Encina/9000 Server. This means that businesses investing in the HP
DCE/9000 and HP Encina/9000 Server components will have a choice in
transaction processing monitor technologies. The CICS monitor will provide
an excellent opportunity to protect investments in CICS applications and
expertise.
o Transactional Integrity
The foundation for distributed computing is HP DCE/9000 which includes
services such as threads, Remote Procedure Call(RPC) and directory and time
services. HP Encina/9000 extends the benefits of these services with data
integrity features specifically designed for OLTP environments.
For example, HP Encina/9000 facilitates distributed, two-phase commits
across heterogeneous databases. Two-phase commit provides an "all or
nothing" execution of OLTP transactions. Either all participants in the
transaction are able to commit, or the transaction is aborted. This
feature is critical to preserving the integrity of multiple, distributed
OLTP transactions.
Other data integrity features of HP Encina/9000 include the transactional
remote procedure call for insuring the integrity of RPCs as well as
logging, locking and recovery features for updating and rolling back
databases when transactions fail.
o Backed by the the open systems leader
HP Encina/9000 offers you one benefit that is unmatched in other industry
offerings -- the backing of HP's open systems leadership. As the market's
#1 UNIX vendor (1), HP knows open systems and UNIX. HP has helped hundreds
of businesses move from closed, single-vendor environments to open
computing. When coupled with HP leadership in developing many of the
components in DCE, HP emerges as the clear leader in open, distributed
computing. Investments in HP DCE/9000 and HP Encina/9000 are backed by
this HP experience and expertise.
HP OpenRoad to Distributed Computing
HP Encina/9000 is one part of HP's overall OpenRoad(tm) to Distributed
Computing. The OpenRoad product family also includes HP DCE/9000 as well
as products for distributed system management. Coupled with the HP history
of worldwide support, and a suite of distributed computing training
classes, HP offers a complete distributed computing solution for today's
businesses.
Diagram 2.0 - HP Encina/9000 Components
HP Encina/9000 Server This is the data integrity "engine" component,
providing logging, locking and recovery; will be
a foundation for either the HP Encina/9000
Monitor or the CICS monitor. This component
includes the X/Open XA interface.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
HP Encina/9000 Client This component is enabled on all nodes in the
distributed OLTP environment, allowing these
systems to participate in the distributed
two-phase commit protocol; includes the
transactional RPC and transactional C features.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
HP Encina/9000 Monitor This component assists programmers in
developing, executing and administering
Encina-based applications. Layered on top of HP
Encina/9000 Server, this component carries out
load balancing, cell management and scheduling.
HP Encina/9000 Structured File Server, a unique
VSAM-like file system is bundled with the HP
Encina/9000 Monitor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
HP Encina/9000 PPC This component allows systems in the Encina
Executive environment to communicate via the Common
Programming Interface Communications (CPI-C)
over TCP/IP.
